covering a trellis.

Hello folks, I'm asking for your sugestions for covering a trellis about 6ft high x4 ft wide. Trouble is, it is screwed into paving slabs and acts a screen to hide the side of my bin area from people passing the side gate. Therefore anything I might grow will have to be in a trough or pot. Id like a clematis or a rose but I doubt that would do in a trough.
What do you recommend?
Arty.

Is it to be evergreen? How much time are you prepared to put in on maintaince? What is the aspect (how much sun does it get and when)?

Its about N.East aspect. I dont mind maintenance ata ll. Pruning, spraying etc, all fine by me. It dosent have to be evergreen either.

How about 2 different ones in 2 pots/troughs?

Clematis 'Jackmanii' is extremely shade tolerant - purple flowers in summer. Plant about a foot or so deeper than the top of the pot the Clematis came in (stops wilt killing plant completly if it gets it) and mulch to protect roots from sun.

David Austin roses are also pretty shade tolerant - Grace is good in containers and shade. It is a repeat flowerer so has long season of interest. Will need tying in as it grows and annual pruning to keep it to the size of your trellis.

Both are 'heavy' feeders so long as you use a good slow release fertiliser and some heavy loam compost (john innes no3), use crocks (or broken up polystyrene bits) and water all should be good.

Thanks Westia. You see I am worried about the clematis because if it needs the top of theroot ball a foot deeper than the soil surface and then you need room for the roots them selves, I dont think that would fit in a average depth size of pot.
The rose is lovely, I see it is a shrub rose, I was thinking maybe a climber would also be OK there to make use/cover the trellis?
