MedicAlert

I'm hopping mad, have been a medicalert customer for years and have always renewed on time, kept my details up to date and buy new jewellery every year.

This year I changed my name and it wasn't because I got married but medicalert wont change my name on their records until I produce a marriage certificate or deed poll document (which doesn't exist in Scotland). They are asking for more documents than my GP did when I changed names (he just got me to fill out a form with my new name on it) and I'm really annoyed as I need an up to date card with my new name on it. They've charged me for the card and bracelet that I've ordered but wont make them up!

There may not be deed polls in Scotland but the change of name is recorded on a birth certificate which you can apply for

So you would need this to change any name on bank details also

    Scotland

Deeds poll do not exist under Scots law. Scots law requires only that no one can change his or her name with the intent to defraud.

While merely informing others of the new name is enough for it to take legal effect, those whose births are registered in Scotland or have been legally adopted there can optionally apply to the Registrar General for Scotland to have their birth certificate amended to show the new name and have the respective register updated. The Registrar requires proof that someone has been living using their new name before an updated birth certificate can be issued. The easiest way to prove that is to have a passport or driving licence issued in the new name.

I have my new birth certificate, I changed my name on the register of births, deaths and marriages as you need to. I have a passport, birth cert, NHS registration card, bank cards and cheque books with new name (paid for medicalert with the new cheque book come to think of it) but they wont accept any of these, just a marriage certificate or a deed poll document neither of which I have.

I'm more annoyed that they've cashed my cheque knowing that their policy wont allow me to get a new card or pendant made up.
  • Dear Glaswejen,

I am writing on behalf of MedicAlert having read the comment below with interest.

I can appreciate your annoyance at having to overcome hurdles to change your name with MedicAlert. It seems that our process is a little strict, and we should be more flexible with this request.

We protect our Members medical and personal details very closely, and therefore go to great lengths to ensure that they are confidential. As you can imagine, as an organisation that holds very sensitive information this is important to us.

However, I think that with this issue our systems are a little onerous. I am happy to work with my colleagues to ensure that we take the appropriate steps to ensure that we are talking to the correct individual. Clearly, we don't wish to annoy our Members.

If you would like to email me at clunn@medicalert.org.uk or telephone 0800 581 420 I will be happy to discuss this you.

I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully we can resolve this issue.

    Best wishes,
    Chris

Sorry have only just saw this post when I went to post an update that I've still not managed to procure either my jewellery, new cards or a refund back onto my card, have emailed the person above and hopefully all will be sorted.

update: medicalert got back to me the same day i emailed Chris (above), they said that they will dispatch my emblem this week so hopefully will get it next week. The person I spoke to was a customer service manager, he assured me that they will retrain their staff to know what ID should be provided by people in Scotland who don't have a deed poll document.
