I have missed the news lately because my daughter is poorly,
last night my friend told me the price of bread is going to rise because of crop failure.
When does this come into effect ?
will the price of flour go up ?
Can any one tell me more ?
thanks ,

I hope not, bread's so expensive to buy as it is. I occassionally (sp) made my own, but I don';t have a breadmaker, dunno if I would use it regularly or if it would just take up more room ! Do you have one ?0

I don't know, but it's been a bad year for several crops; I guess all you can do is keep an eye on prices in shops. I haven't noticed any changes so far. If it really worries you, you can register free with the LIFFE Commodities exchange and keep an eye on the milled wheat prices. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

Some of my family is involved in the grain / flour industry. Haven't heard them grumbling recently, but wouldn't be too surprised if the UK grain farms have had it hard this year.
However, remember that it is quite easy to import grain for flour. Whether this means that the prices have to go up, or not is anybody's guess. Right now I wouldn't worry. But having a breadmaker wouldn't solve the problem....as you still have to use flour.
Flour and grain is used in so many products other than bread. Biscuits, cakes, pastry anything, chocolate bars etc....Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

My dad, being an arable farmer, is very dubious about the price of wheat going up/through the roof. The majority of wheat used in UK bread is actually North American, with a small fraction coming from the likes of my dad. Luckily, my dad has got all his milling quality wheat harvested at excellent specifications so if the price does go up.......... then he's ok!
Talking to my FIL yesterday (who works for Rank Hovis....) he said that the media have grabbed the story and not given the other half of the price rise. That is, the rise in the price of energy - from the power to run the mills, to the price of diesel that is put into the lorries.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
yes I have a bread maker, I have only used it now and then but more so lately. I made a lovely organic loaf the other day with organic flour...
didnt know if it would work because your supposed to use strong flour.
I am thinking of using it more often to save money, but Ive never worked out how much it actually costs for each loaf ?
Does anyone know how much the bakery charge for a large loaf ?0 -

Wheat can be kept in a controlled environment for a good long while and strict controls are kept on beasties. Once it is milled and turned into flour, then another set of controlled environment rules kick in. Wheat can be kept for longer in its natural state than when it gets turned into flour.
In addition, (sorry, I'm getting boring) there are a lot of different categories and varieties of wheat for different jobs from milling wheat to softer wheat for biscuits and cakes through to feed wheat for animals. Arable farmers will grow a mixture of crops and varieties to spread the risk of their investment.

I am sure that the cost of fuel has something to do with it anyway as everything has to be transported - meant also that we cannot store the flour for too long in our central heated kitchens.Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0
