Damp smell in hallway but no sign of damp?

Since moving into our new house, there's been what we thought was a musty smell as you walk through the door into the hallway. As the house had been empty for 3 months and the front door was a old church door, we just put it down to mustiness.
But now the smell hasn't gone and someone even commented today that it smells damp which it does actually. But there's no sign of damp other than the smell, there's laminate flooring down which looks fine so it can't be anything under the floor.
The downstairs loo comes off the hall and whilst it's seen better days and suite needs replacing, there's no smell in there.
As you open the door it smells like a wet towel has been left somewhere. Not too sure what to do next?
Any advice please?
Thanks

Get a damp proofing company in to do a survey?0

May sound strange but have you checked the light fitting in the hall? We had a similar experience and foud the smell came from the light as the bulb was getting hot, and the plastic fitting was getting too hot. Changed the fitting and solved the problem.0

I agree.
Check underlay.
check floorboards
check solum.
we used to have a smell of dampness. In fact the survey for the house picked it up on one wall. It turns out that the problem was a leaking pipe under floor and the water was seeping up the wall causing the damp smell.
When we got the pipe fixed, and the wall dried out the smell disappeared.
No sign of water, dampness or smell anymore.

Is water coming in from the doorstep? It may be going under the flooring and sitting underneath.0

Hi all,
I am having the exact same problem, in the exact same areas. I am awaiting further replies to the above before I know what to do.
It weird as I can also smell damp up the stairs ???:undecided
However, in relation to the damp smell from my front door, the boiler was leaking water a few months ago, which has now been repaired. I moped the floor up. So I am thinking that the water got underneath it, and waited for the summer to come along before smelling out the front passage way.0 -
