Its a pain in the reverse and be prepared to bare all information about yourself to the council or whoever runs a particular scheme.

Also be careful as to which scheme you go for as you might not even own the property outright (paying a mortgage and rent) and you might be restricted to who you sell on to and you might not be able to get the best mortgage deal either depending on the property/area/keyworker deal.

1st thing is to find out from your council if you are classed as a keyworker in the first place and then find out about their schemes.

  • Cookie,
Just to reassure you - we purchased our house through the Key Worker Scheme - my partner is a teacher in Essex.

The service we received from Moat Housing was second to none - the information provided wasn't unusual or intrustive, and they gave us a maximum buying price within 3 weeks of us submitting our application.

Having them involved (as far as I can tell) didn't slow the process down at all, though it did limit the number of lenders who would consider us for a mortgage, but Moat put us in touch with a fee-free broker who specialised in the scheme so he prevented us wasting our time.

We now own our home (mortgaged of course) with a 2nd charge in the name of Moat for the same % of the purchase price they provided. When we sell up, we give that % of proceeds back to Moat.
The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...
