P60 - wage for year is £4600, £1k paid in tax???????

My Husbands wage for last year was the above amount, I work full time earning approx £18k, on his p60 it says he has paid nearly £1000 in tax, out of the annual salary.

Surely surely surely this isn't right? Will he get it back within a few weeks with it being end of April?

Any advice gratefully received.

    hi,
BR is the old emergency code. This is the one employers use when they don't have the correct code yet. He hasn't been given any allowances at all.

He will need to physically claim the tax back from HMRC. Write to them with a copyh of his P60 and recalim it.

Did he give his employer his p45 when he started the job, if not did he fill in a p46.

The company needs to sort his code out for him. Tell him to insist on it.
The company can do this on line with a P46 in minutes.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I have had tax rebated before in a cheque through the post. But thinking about it, I'm sure its not been in the current year, so if he doesn't ask for it now will it come through post? I will tell him tho!!!

I am not sure but I think in answer to your question the BR code means because the payroll department did not know his tax code and how much he can earn before he started paying tax, the payroll took 20 per cent tax from zero pounds instead of a higher more valid amount relevant to his tax code.

BR means he will pay tax on all of the wages/salary, instead of receiving the 6475 tax free allowance.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Is this his sole job? BR is normally used for 2nd jobs and means he pays 20% on everything. It is not emergency code .... which is 647L
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Hi, it was his 2nd job for approximately 2 months from Nov 08 to Jan 09. Since Jan 09 he has just had this one. He applied for it knowing he was going to lose his main job, so now he works part time and me full.
