Dishwasher burning smell and won't turn on

I know this isn't a dishwasher fixing forum but I came home and my mother has a broken dishwasher, she said there was a burning smell from it and now it won't turn on. I'm getting used to fixing broken ipods by reading up guides, buying spares on-line and replacing them myself etc and figured why not try out the same with a dishwasher!

Does anyone know what it could be, she seems to thing something is fried, my guess is the electrics in the control panel(?!), there's a possibility it could be the motor as well but as I say I don't really know too much.

Is there somewhere that could give me a better idea? I don't mid spending a bit of money for advice etc if it saves me time but if I know I can buy spares and probably fix it myself I'd try that first!

there is not enough info to diagnose it properly in your post, but, the first thing a dishwasher doe's when you start any cycle is turn on the drain pump to clear away any old water, so my crystal ball says look at the drain pump first, it will siezed up, you can access it from the underneath of the machine, the shaft should turn easily with your fingers if it is not seized up, easyish job to do, use the pm system if you need any more advice rather than on this post

we had a similar problem in our rented house. We turned it on and the water didnt come out, it started heating up and smoke came out of it!!! I spoke to the plumber and he told me to check the spinning arms to see if they were clogged where the water comes out. They were, I cleaned it and the problem has never repeated. It was a bit scary, I thought it was on fire!!!! Not good when you have a baby and a 2 year old in the house at the time!
