I have done a quick search and couldn't see this particular idea- but apologies if it has been posted already!

I read this tip in Saga magazine this week (it won £100)

Instead of buying expensive copper tape to deter the wretched snails & slugs, glue 1 penny & 2 penny pieces (or any old copper coins) around the pot fairly closely together. haven't had a chance to try this idea but it seems great!
Watch out snails, hope my hostas have leaves this year.

I've tried that, didn't work for me.
Fresh pot, opened new bag of compost, so knew nothing in the soil, put in 1 sunflower about 5" tall.....1" stem left the next morning.
And I made sure they were nice clean 2p too:(

IIRC the garlic spray works well on hostas.

I agree LE, garlic spray works very well, as does copper tape and Vaseline too, but Vaseline doesn't last long especially if it rains.

    Depends where you put it.

I am not sure 1p,2p contain that much copper.

I tried the coins the snails still got to the plants but had all new shells and my money had gone? :rotfl: Copper pipe isn't that expensive wrap that round the base if you want to try and cut it in half but it would have to be a fine blade cutter like a dremel.
