How can I fix Corrupted files?

Hi

Does anyone know the best (and cheapest of course) way to fix corrupted files?

I have a corrupted word file (well it will not open, I assume it's corrupted)

I have:

checked that it has a .doc extension
scanned it with my virus guard
tried to open it in other formats, none work.

I've managed to salvage the text (although not formatted of course) by opening word and going to file, open, recover text from any file. But really wanted the whole thing with pictures and layout.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Marianne

You could try running "Scandisk" (from the system tools menu). Sometimes works, depending on level of corruption.

Other then that, someone far more technical than me will be along shortly.

  • This suggested website has info on recovering Word files, but if you can't open the file at all, the advice there may not be of much help to you.

This tip I found in the newsgroups may be a bit more useful:

"If you are using Office XP, there is a great little tool - with Word open, go file > open and then when the list of files come up, just highlight the document you want then the 'open' has a drop-down arrow - choose 'open & repair'. Has always fixed corrupt formatting for me."

Before doing any of the above, make a copy of the corrupted file and keep it for safe keeping. Just so that the file doesn't become unrecoverable. There are tools that could fix the file if it's not been altered beyond repair.
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.
