Fly to 1 Italian city and out of another- help pls

Hello,

Next year we would like to go to Italy in July, and ideally fly to Venice, stay 3 nights there, then get the train to Florence and stay there a couple of nights, then get the train to Rome and stay there a few more nights. We would obviously like to do this the cheapest way possible, but I was wondering if there are any agents who would arrange it as a part of a package (the hotels and flights), maybe online ones? I haven't made this kind of trip before so not sure if it is possible other than to arrange each bit separately myself, so if anyone has any tips or suggestions I would be very grateful.

Many thanks, Sarah

to be honest, it would be fairly easy to book yourself. If you are looking to do the trip as cheap as possible - Ryanair, Easyjet, etc, do great deals. Not sure where you live, but both have flights from a range of airports. Next summers programme isn't available for sale yet, but register on the websites for email notification of when it is.

In terms of accommodation, I've always found venere.com a great website. Offers a good range of accommodation in terms of classification and cost. You can search by specific areas, cost, classification. You also get the comments of people who have stayed there before. Another benefit is that unlike many websites you don't need to pay in advance, you pay as you leave the hotel.

For your internal train transfers - Trenitalia (the Italian railway company) has an english version of their website. Go to https://www.trenitalia.com and click on the 'english' button at the top of the page. You can get timetable information and costs. Italian trainfares tend to be very reasonable, the trains fairly reliable. Good experience overall.

Thanks both of you. With the trains, do you know what facilities there are to store the luggage? We were thinking of taking smallish wheelie cases (the size that fit into the overhead storage on planes).

    Thanks, Sarah

On the intercity trains the storage space is ok to be honest. If you only have small wheelie cases you'll be fine. Italy is a wonderful country and very easy to travel around. You'll love it.

Only 4 weeks and 5 days to I go back - can't wait!!

    hi sarah

there was plenty of room between the seats on the intercity train from venice to rome no problem at all. i would say mind you that the trains are not very nice and the buffet had limited food so i would take your own ( there are places outside venice station for food etc )

    hope this helps

Also, if you don't speak italian..you can go to the machines at the train station..its got english and its very very easy to use!
    1) from and to.
    2) give u times when next train or what date
    3) 1st or 2nd class
    4) price..
    its very easy.
I've done that trip before...but not florence but pisa..you get a great view of the countryside.

saraht: oh..there is something i forget to mention..well actually 3 things..
    1) keep your eye on ur baggage at all times at train station cos its a bit dodgy.
    2) on the train platform you have to stick your ticket in a validating machine before you board..cos there are train inspectors.
    3) the trains aren't the best in the world but they are fast, cheap, punctional like what it states in the timetable! ..I think britain has something to learn!

    ciao

hi, I have done a similar trip and I echo everyone else, book it yourself! easyjet fly to venice (Ryanair fly to Trevisio which isnt quite as convienient) & the Italian trains are very decent - its worth paying extra for the "eurostar" trains, I used to buy my ticket for the next leg when I arrived in the city, so I knew I had my reservation confirmed a couple of days in advance - the trains can be very busy!

Coming home from Rome you can usually get some stupidly cheap (£15 each) flights from Ciampino with Ryanair if you are flexable - aim for midweek flights.

    Have a great time!

As for flights, don't forget to try BA on their website click the one way and multi-city link, you might be surprised how reasonable they are compared to the so called "budget airlines". They are showing prices from £87pp in september for you planned journey, an "all in" price including tax etc.
