I reluctantly have to agree that Nationwide are not the great company they one were. We have had accounts with them for over 20 years.

My credit card was declined in Vegas a couple of days ago. When I called them I was told it was blocked and that I should have told them I was going abroad.

I told them that it says on their website NOT to call them if you are going abroad, but apparently this has recently changed.

Thanks I have just read the criteria for the Zero account with debit card and you are correct you dont need a mortgage with them but you do need to make it your main account and pay in £1000 a month

    I might do that.

    Qualifying criteria

    You are eligible if:
    • You have a mortgage with us that is not in arrears, or an investment with Santander ISA Managers Ltd, Santander Portfolio Management UK Ltd or Santander Unit Trust Managers Ltd; and
    • it is your main current account and you pay in a minimum of £1,000 each month; and
    • you switch your current account using the Account Transfer Service (new current account customers only).

Hi photome...I read this as you do have to have a mortgage or investment with them for the Zero current account?

Luci - sorry to hear about that...thank you for posting though as I think a lot of us would have been in the same boat.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

photome - I don't have any accounts with Abbey or Santander (current, savings or otherwise).

The ZERO credit card does not require any additional accounts, however, the Zero debit card by nature of taking money directly from an account- will need a relevant account to debit the money from.

Looks like I can forget the debit card then.

What advantage if any does the Zero credit card have over the Post Office credit card for use abroad

I stand to be corrected, but I believe there is little discernible difference as both do not load foreign currency transaction fees.

It's still on their website as I type this.

Yes I thought it would be and argued that point with them.

Luckily I had cash to pay the restaurant, but if it had happened the following night it might have been a different story as we went to an expensive restaurant.

I did have my N/W debit card with me too and apparently they don't need told...........

How can there be no cash withdrawal charges on a credit card as surely that is a cash advance which would be subject to a fee.

Please correct me if i am wrong
