mystery charge

Options
a relative died recently...she was 93....her house has no motgage or loans in the last 20 years and no record of letters or payments to such things...however a mystery charge is showing over 24 years old...can a loan be valid for so long when no statements or updates were ever received or other information could it still be valid

Comments

  • Get a solicitor to go through this or make enquiries with whomever the charge is with. A charge on a property can be put in place for a number of things but the solicitor would be the best bet as when they deal with the sale/transfer they will have likely to have to get this removed on transfer of title.

It could be the case that your relative paid off the mortgage some years ago but chose for the building society or bank to keep her deeds. In this scenario the building society or bank would leave a nominal £1.00 outstanding on the mortgage to keep her deeds. Thus why a charge is still showing on the land registry.
