Cleaning soot off carpets

We had a pigeon come down a chimney in our newly decorated living room (new carpets and paintwork) - on Tuesday - stuck behind the gas fire - when released (after more than 24 hours) - it flew around the room - depositing soot everywhere - I managed to clean the walls using sugarsoap - but the (brand new/£400+) carpet has soot in spots all over it.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to remove the soot ?
I have vaccumed and have kept it dry so far.......
We are getting bird guards fitted to the chimney stacks to prevent a reoccurance !!
