If she has any sense she will not authorise builders directly, but she should say in writing something like 'you can proceed up to insurers contribution of x, arrange the contractors yourself'.

It is usual about VAT to pay it at the end yes, as insurers only have to pay it if contractors are actually VAT registered, and its amazing how many claim to be at the beginning but are not at the end is surprising.

Hi, yes she has said that. We had to get our own quote as they told us it was up to us and we did. She then asked me to email it over and then she called to say the amount which they would contribute to it and then she said the other amount, which is VAT, would be paid on completion of the work.

I have been told twice in a phone call of the amount but have not had anything at all in writing. I know that its probably me here being paranoid but I have not got a lot of trust in the insurance sector (as my posts show!!) but was really pleased with UK assistance after a rocky start with Direct Line.

I am having the work started on Monday for my bathroom and it was my contractor that actually said to me "well you have got it in email haven't you???" to which I had to reply "no I have not". In fact everything was over the loss adjusters mobile. I have emailed her again yesterday to ask that she confirm this in writing or email (although she said she would send a cheque out straight away so the cheque will no doubt arrive first lol) but I just thought it was strange to not send out a letter of confirmation. Is this usual?
