selling on ebay

Hi there, I have just set up an ebay sellers account!! Is it good? I have a few bits and pieces at home to get rid of (cds mainly and a few clothes) and though i would try it. A bit wary of giving them all my bank details though. Would you reccomend a paypal account or just accept cheques?

thanks guys mandy

I love selling on ebay, I sell clothes I have bought and not worn much or maybe never worn - tut tut. Perfume, unused cosmetics, even a Weight Watchers book once, anything and everything goes. For me its just a bit of fun, I love having things for sale and keeping an eye on them. For a long time I just accepted cheques but the process is so long so I started accepting payments by paypal and it is much quicker and easier, plus I have a bit of a kitty in my paypal account for when I want to buy something.
Go for it I say, and look out for the cheap and free listing days.
    Good Luck

thanks for that, i am just about to put my first item on (a cd). Its a bit daunting at the moment. I would only sell clothes that were either unworn or hardly worn as i wouldn't want any hassle.

Don't forget to factor in all your fees as they can add up a bit and eat into any profit you make. There are listing fees that you pay regardless of whether the item sells or not, plus final value fees and paypal fees (if applicable) on a succesful sale.

It is also quite addictive, so be warned!

I must admit i got a bit confused when looking at the fees. I have put a starting bid of 99p and a set postage of £2.00 but i havent added anything for paypal. does this sound about right? (a bit late now) I looked at what others were doing.

A straightforward listing at 99p will have cost you 15p. That can be checked in two ways, firstly before you click on confirm to list your item it will tell you the fees you will incure. Secondly the email you get to say your item was listed will also tell you how much you paid to list it.

If it sells you will pay a final value fee based on the sale price. If the buyer pays by paypal you will also have to pay a percentage of the total amount (including post and packing charges) plus a flat fee of 20p to paypal.

£2 p and p is quite high for a CD which may put bidders off a little, but if you have a unique CD and it has successfully sold with that amount of post and packing before then you should be OK. You can check completed listings using the menu on the LH side of the page when searching for the item.

I've actually just bought a CD with £2.20 p&p, which I thought was rather steep, but it's one that's quite hard to find at a reasonable price, so I was happy to pay a total of £6.69 for it. If I want to purchase a more common title with many copies to choose from, I would tend to put only the ones with low p&p prices on my watch list.
CDs are usually easy to list, because most have autofill details which you can access by entering the barcode number, and once you know what they cost to post (watch out for Aug 21st changes) it doesn't vary much.
If you're selling clothes on eBay, it's worth paying the extra 15p for a Gallery pic. Clothes can often be hard to sell without one. This feature isn't necessary for CDs though; they tend to sell just as well (or not) with or without Gallery.

if you're listing clothes, just make sure you put something about no returns for anything other than a misdescribed item, and comment that sizing is not a valid reason (ie if they buy a 14 and they can't get into it - that's not your fault)
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.

Make sure that you have upgraded your paypal account if you have shown the paypal credit card logo on your listing :)
