Buying new Sat Nav - help!

Hi
I hope this is the right forum for this!!
I would like to buy my Husband a new Sat Nav for his birthday - his current one is rapidly coming to the end of it's life!! However, i'm really not too sure where to start with the search.......
He currently has a TomTom, but i'm happy to consider all makes / models. Do you have a particular Sat Nav make preference?
It needs to be a slim model (as it's usually me that has to lug it around in my handbag when we go out - i figured that with a slim one he'll have no excuse not to put it in his pocket!!!).
Obviously i'd like it to be as reasonably priced as possible :) I don't really want to spend more than £150 (£200 max). Do you think i'll get a good one within this price range? I'm happy to buy online or in-store.
Thanks in advance :)

I used to have a Road Angel which was very compact but it had a monthly charge for updating the sped camera database and there wasn't, at the time, an easy way of updating the maps. When that Sat Nav was stolen I did quite a lot of research into which ones were any good and Tom Tom came out pretty high. I had a play around with the Garmins but didn't find them as user friendly at the Tom Tom. I should also say that the Tom Tom can be updated for a 1 off fee whenever you decide its time to do it.

In conclusion, I agree with the above posts who have said the same thing with less waffle.
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

Why not get a Nokia Phone with free updates? and youve got a spare phone as well.

I have used many different satnavs and tomtom is hard to beat. why not just go for a new unit such as this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/188955 and use his existing tomtom card with it. its the MSE way ;)

I have just had to purchase a new one after getting my van broke into last Friday.

I went for the Garmin nuvi 1490T. Main reason being they have the best reputation for after sales. I also went for the £100 lifetime map updates and £20 speed camera option.

Tom Tom seem quite good, but as Garmin own Navtech and Tom Tom own Tele atlas, or maybe the other way round, stick to one of these as they will always keep the best and latest maps for themselves first, so to speak.

You wait till you have to update a Garmin, too expensive, unless youve done as post 8.

I would definitely go with a TomTom as they are the best (in my opinion) but also your husband is familiar with TomToms and their use, if you buy him a different one he might get disturbed, he might resent you for it, as he perceives that you've downgraded him on his satnav! Or maybe that's just how I would behave as a big TomTom fan :)
