Old East Midlands Electricity Shares
I am attempting to put my motherinlaws finances in order and have come across lots of letters referring to Shares in this company, obviously they go back an awful long way and the company have long disappeared. How do I find out if there is any value on the shares or even if they have already been cashed. The dear lady has Altzeimers and I am finding it very difficult. She also has lots of insurance paying in books from old companies which I would think have merged or disappeared. I would be most grateful for any assistance you can offer.

East Midlands Electricity was bought by Powergen who themselves were then bought by E.ON so you might want to try contacting them.0

If the share certificates had any value, she would be getting dividends sent regularly either to her, or paid into a bank.
A lot of older people took out whole life insurance policies that pay out on death or age 85 - usually for tiny amounts.
I had to wind up the estate of an elderly relative who started paying 3 old pence a week in 1926 and kept paying tiny amounts for over 50 years(no idea why as he was reasonably well off) The policy realised £47 - which I suppose was enough for a burial - in 1926!!!!
You will get better advice on the financial forums.0 -

East Midlands Electricity were bought by an American Company in around 1997, who paid cash for the shares, so your mother -in - law should have received the cash then if she still held the shares.
The American Company sold EME to Powergen.
One point EME shares, as all the old Companies had a share in National Grid, and shareholders received National Grid shares when National Grid was split from the electricity companies. Your mother in law might have sold these shares immediately, but keep an eye open for them with any unpresented cheques.0 -
Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply.. I will follow these up0
