Our white camellia got one red flower. Is this a common occurance?

Yes. It is common with certain camellias - but it still makes a lovely surprise.
Some camellias are cross-bred and (if you're lucky, like you!) you'll get to see one of the parents coming through.
As far as I know, there's nothing wrong with 'sporting' camellias - that's the term for it, whereas in other shrubs and roses you are advised to cut back the rogue branch.
