Thought I would start this thread in anticipation of my courgettes and tomatoes being planted out!:j
I usually half my bags (so they stand up like a plastic pot!) and have one plant to a half bag.

I can't help with the question but I just wanted to say what a good idea to cut them in half :T:T. I've been using grow bags for years and have never thought of this! Far better than the tradition method, gives the plants a deeper root run.

  • cheap isnt always best :)

They have tomato rite ones in tesco 2 for £4

was gonna get lidl ones for £1.19 this week but i am not sure how good they are compared to a leading brand.

Just think if you skimp on the grow bag you might not get such a good crop?!

Homebase have them for around £1.50 - if you get 4 you get the 5th free I believe. Thats what I use and the plants seem to do fine.

If you aren't sure about the quality of the compost in cheap gro-bags, it would be easy enough to give the plants a bit more food - tomato food would probably do for courgettes too. Also need to make sure the compost can hold enough water, so hopefully it won't be too sandy.

There's more to it than fertiliser levels. If a growing bag's compost has a poor structure, it could easily inhibit drainage and root growth. For lettuces and other quick growing crops it may not matter, but for anything that is going to be in the bag for a season, why save a few pennies and risk a crop worth pounds?

If this year's Bulrush growing bags are the same quality as last year's that's not a bad buy at all. I bought one for some strawberries and it was as good as some of the more expensive brands.

Just bought the lidls one's this morning. They are organic and peat free.
