Paypal!

Hi Folks,

Just sold a mobile phone on Ebay. Received the payment from the buyer through Paypal. I arranged to withdraw the funds from Paypal Sat Afternoon. Received a email from Paypal saying my account had been screened and was high risk? Signed in to my Paypal account and they have reverse the withdrawl I put through, so the funds are back in my Paypal account. I'm not able to withdrawl the funds until I've actioned the below-
1. Set up direct debit
2. Confirm my home tel number
3. Provide tracking details for the parcel, which has not been sent yet!. (Sending it Monday)
4. Fax them details of who my supplier/suppliers are. (find this one very strage as I don't have suppliers!, I'm a private seller. The phone I sold was a unwanted upgrade)

Help

Thanks x

  • The email that you received apparently from 'PayPal' did it look genuine? Did it include your full name and not just 'Dear PayPal User'?

I've never heard of PayPal asking for tracking information when the buyer hasn't said there is a problem and I'm sure they don't ask who your suppliers are. It all seems a little strange.

It might be another of their security measures, I've heard rumours of these before and we did have a thread on something similar a couple of months back.

Assuming the email was genuine it might be that someone has reported you for some breach, and maybe, just maybe there was something in your auction that gave cause for concern. For instance, a stock photo or a sudden change in your selling history. As ebay have now been highly reported in all th epress as taking a firm line with the same of mobile phones, you may be their random sample to double check.

If in doubt give paypal a call.

Never Ever Click A Link From Paypal In An Email, If You Have Go To Paypal Site, Through Ebay And Click Spam In Paypal And Report It,
If You Have Given Any Details I Would Phone Them Asap And Get Your Account Looked At!

OP says his account shows that the payment has been stopped pending enquiry, so it looks like email is genuine.

As we've all moaned at the apparent lack of security when buying phones and other high cost goods maybe we should be looking at this added security as a good thing rather than a bad thing.

A genuine seller like the OP should easily be able to supply all the info that paypal wants, a scammer is highly unlikely to want to do so and maybe will have to run away from the sale and save his victim from losing money.

It is genuine, as I logged directly in to https://www.paypal.co.uk. They advised me to print a covering fax letter with a barcode, from their webiste. I have faxed this off to them. Looks like they won't release the funds until they can be sure the buyer has received their item. This is not a buyer complaint, its some typr of account screening paypal has done. They feel the transaction is high risk

  • I suppose if PayPal are adding extra security then that's a good thing.
