Without even knowing any of the details I can tell you that a roadworthy 1994 Defender is worth more than £1000. 80's models go for that on ebay without MOT!

    :o Oops OK I will agree. I read it as a 1994 Discovery not a Defender :o

Spot on! I just wish i could speak to someone who's first language is british :-( I feel incredibly mean saying that but i'm going round and round in circles.

If we had crashed before receiving the letter saying my policy had been cancelled we would be in deep deep trouble! by the time we got the letter it had already been cancelled 4 days previously so we were very lucky.

Everyone....... PLEASE AVOID AVIVA! it's not always obvious who are actually insuring you so worthwhile asking the broker to clarify.

This thread will make me think twice about who I renew with (currently with Aviva)

Saying that, didn't have any problems claiming with them (well, Norwich Union) when I bumped my mum's car in 2008.

Why is it that insurance companies sole purpose now seems to be, not to be that helpful lifeline when something goes wrong, but to pay out as little/avoid paying out as much as they can possibly get away with, and yet another thing to do battle with when something does go wrong.
Car insurance companies making pathetic offers, travel insurers rejecting every claim except once in a blue moon, due to their misleading small print, PPI never paying out, etc etc...
Its just a shame I can't afford a proper insurance company yet, as an 18 year old male driver.

Sorry I don't really have anything to add to the excellent suggestions already made by others.
