HELP: CHAPS payment not recieved on the same day!?!

hi guys,

I have instructed for a same day CHAPS transfer this morning at 9.30am.... the person who I sent it to checked at around 4.15pm and it hadnt come through. They were unable to check again today.

What is the chance that it hasn't gone through?? If it hasn't, what do I do? I rang my bank and they confirmed that it was definitely paid/left my bank and should therefore have been recieved today also.

I am going to ring the person tomorrow morning to see if its come through... but if it hasn't what do I do??? If it hasn't, I was thinking of going to their branch with them to talk to their manager? (is this worth it?). I am buying a used car from them, and given the funds have left my account, I don't know what to do if its not in their account tomorrow?!

Are recieving banks (in this case natwest) sometimes slow to process the incoming payments?

Please help asap. thanks.

Never had problems. But I understand that it can be as late (the CHAPS lines close at 1530hrs) as 1730hrs / 1800hrs before it's viewable online.

A 'call to the Bank (he'll have to make it) would establish if the funds had arrived.

I have failed to receive an incoming CHAPS but that was because HSBC messed up the sending. If you complain you should get your CHAPS fee back (and possibly any other losses...)
  • I'm not bothered about the fee... im bothered about the funds going through so I can collect the car before the weekend!

Fingers crossed its cleared by tomorrow morning... but if it hasn't, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?? (My banks already confirmed its sent). Also, even if its sent at 9.30am, can it take as late as 5/6pm to clear?

You say you instructed it at 0930hrs ..... that is not the same as it being sent at 0930hrs. It's manual and has to be checked.

And inward Banks tend to do CHAPS transmissions in bulk when received after the lines close. It's then a mainly manual interface to get them onto accounts so - yes - as post #2, it can be up to 1800 hrs before viewable.

  • The first thing to do is get the receiver to check if it's arrived in the morning. If the answer is no then you need to talk to your bank and tell them it has not arrived. Your bank should then sort it out.
