I think it was probably costing them quite a lot (e.g. I pay for everything I possibly can on it to get the max points), and they worked out that as long as they were still giving out some extra points, people would go for it, and it'd save them money.

Use a GE Money credit card and get 3% off your fuel. Buy it at Sainsbury, and use your Nectar card at the same time. If your Sainsbury is close to an Asda, they seem to try and beat Asda's Petrol price, so you're getting cheap petrol too !!

I've just got an Egg Money card. It's only 1% cashback but it's for life whereas (I think) the GE one is only for 6 months?

I usually go to Asda as it's cheapest although the Morrisons card is apparently the equivalent to 1.5p / litre.
