Help with my brakes
Options
Got a Rover 25 which is approaching 5 years old. Have noticed recently that my brakes are making a fair bit of noise when braking. Pretty sure its the pads scrapping against the discs, but it only tends to happen for first few stops after setting off and then seems to correct itself. Changed the pads a couple of years ago (and only doe around 6,000 miles a year) so pretty sure they don't need replacing. Just taken a wheel off to have a look (even though I have no idea what to look at!!) and the pads tend to be touching the discs - is this correct - would have thought there would be a gap, as otherwise brake pads are effectively constantly applying pressure. Noise also only tends to happen when brakes applied hard. Don't tend to have many issues under light braking. Car is going for its service and mot in a couple of months, so will have then checked out then. Just wondered if anyone has any hints before then....

Sounds like you might have a sticking caliper - the part that holds the pads close to the disc.
This will cause the pads to be rubbing constantly, but not enough for you to perhaps notice.
Best get your garage - or even a fast fit to take a look. Most offer 'free' brake inspections - then it's up to you to let them do the job, or not.
At least you'll have had a more informed operative give an opinion!

Ah - that horrible noise is rovers answer to fancy electronic lights that warn you your pads are worn.
I replaced front pads on my 45 and it took about 20mins each side and cost about £28 in total. Garages were at least three times that in most cases
Get new front pads done pretty quick as once the brakes drop into the 'ridge' that makes them make this noise they have a tendancy to stick.
If you feel up to it check them yourself, otherwise take it to a garage to have them inspected, either way don't hang around if you can help it due to a) may get more costly if ignored and b) they tend to stop you hitting things!0 -
Thanks for the suggestions - have had a quick look this morning and noticed the driver side brake pad has worn quite a lot more than the passenger side. Not sure why this would be. Got a mate who has changed pads before so off to Halfords tomorrow to buy some pads....0

Doh - i should have read this yesterday - I'd have gone to an Andrew pages or similar - though some of Halfords part prices have come down.
Let us know how you get on0
