Hi Bets -I'm afraid the comparision sites can only work when they are given Gas/Elec useage to compare, and as a previous renter you are probably aware that for the first few weeks you must take your Utilities from the previous tenants supplier who will automatically put you onto their "Standard" tariff. - So the first move is to contact that supplier to ask about other tariffs
When you have 3 months meter readings under your belt, list them on this site for some advice.

When looking at rentals on offer it's important to look at more than just the rental cost.
Try to avoid any accomodation that:
Is all electric with ECO 7 heating and no Gas CH and Hot water
Has a pre-pay card or key meter
Bars you from changeing the Utility supplier
Has meters in a locked cupboard that you do not have 24/7 access to
Is not well insulated and does not have good quality Double glazing

If you ask about other tariffs, check if you will be entering a annual contract. If you move to one of these you will not be able to change until the end of the contract. Its possibly worth paying a higher price for a short while and having no contract.
