Why are diamonds so darn expensive?

Just a general rant here ladies if no one minds.
Why are diamonds sooo expensive, really they are not that much different to a piece of glass, they are refind rocks out of the ground. I know the work that goes into them and the properties they contain but still someone somewhere must be laughing!
Also, people count the 4C's as though they matter - but I've never looked at a diamond ring and thought ooooh that doesn't look like it's got much C-factor.

So it's all nonsense.

Why then do I feel the need to have diamond earrings and necklace for the wedding day?

Ladies and Gents this concludes my rant, thank you very much for reading. Feel free to comment if you are going to agree with me. Please don't disagree with me cos I don't like it and it wouldn't fit in with the tone of my rant - I'd hate to throw my toys out of my pram in public.

De Beers controls the market and puts most of the diamonds into vaults to deliberately keep prices high

I agree Hayley, I couldnt give two !!!!!! about C's or whatevey are. My engagement ring was defo the cheapest one in the shop but i actually liked it more than the supposed better and more expensive diamonds. It apparently has flaws..... i couldnt tell the difference in all honesty, it just sparkled more! lol

Why dont u just get cubic zirconia jewellery for your wedding day??

Ah, but its being able to look at your jewellery and appreciate that its not just a regular piece of glass, its something which took millions of years to be made. Same with the 4 C's, its all about knowing you've got the great diamond, even if noone else knows. :)

I have cubic zirconia earrings and thinking of a swaroski homemade necklace but really wish I had diamonds - no idea why though, frustrated at myself for wanting something with it such a ridiculous waste of money.
Choice - spend £2k on a diamond to sit on your finger or use it for a fantastic holiday or towards savings for a car etc etc.... It's just bizaar!!!

Thank you so much for agreeing, I like people who agree with me. I think it's because I am a spoilt brat!!!

So does a piece of Coal.

Any item is only worth what someone else is prepared to give you for it.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

See, now the spoilt brat in me is wishing you would agree with me!:p

However, I think I might actually want to agree with you on the first bit. That must be why I have a yearning for another diamond.
The 4 C's bit however, I can't be ars*d to look up and hope I never do!

ariba - thanks! That is one of the points I wish I'd included in my first post. Could you imagine paying £2k for a coal round your neck?

Its all fairly simple. No need to get bogged down in it all unless you are a diamond dealer.

    Colour - A = perfect. F-G-H = perfect to the naked eye.
Cut - what shape it is.
Clarity - How big the marks are in it. VS - Very Small VVS - Very Very Small
Carat - how big you want it! No need for giants. A half carat round diamond is still around 5mm across, huge really. (unless you want the kind of diamond that would sink you if you fell in the sea)
