You can't beat Sabatier in my opinion, I have one that I have been using for nearly 20 years and it's still as good as new, I do take it down the butchers to get it properly sharpened though.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

  • I got a great bargain in ASDA - a 5 piece set of Kitchen Devils Professional knives and a wooden knife block for £35. They were clearing it, it was £95 but I have seen them for less at amazon, etc. They look like this:

My dh who is a butcher is quite impressed with these knives, says the balance is really good and they are very good quality. The bread knife is long and works far better than any other I have used.

The Professional ones are not the same as regular Kitchen Devil knives.

DH only uses Victorinox at work, they are £9 - £25 each and are the standard in butchers knives, you could not go wrong with them.

I also got the Kitchen Devils knife sharpener like this:

from out local cookshop, it does a great job.

Every time I use them I am so thankful I finally have good quality knives!;)

If you have a TKMaxx near you, their knives vary but they have really good pro knives for very reasonable prices. We've ad a few totally steel knives and they're fab.
As for sharpening, get a proper, ceramic steel. these can be up to £100 each, but ours cam from ikea and was less than £9..it's amazingy good!

Other than this, then yes, sabatier are hard to beat. OUrs are 9 years ld as tey were a wedding present, and still great. the secret of all knives is the sharpening though.

We have a set of Sabatier Stellar knives which are good.

I have friends who have an Ikea 365+ set which are also very good.

However, I am of the opinion that if you don't have a good sharpener (and know how to use it) then it doesn't matter what kind of knives you use - they all need sharpening at some point or other and this will make huge difference to how they perform over time.

My favourite knife is a Victronox (sp?) paring knife my mum gave me when I left home - I use it for almost everything.

If you are serious about your knives it's recommended that you get a magnetic rack to store them on, rather than a wooden block, as every time you put your knives in the block, you can dull them slightly if you're not careful. That said, we keep our Sabatiers in the lovely wooden block they came in!
