Refunds for glasses

I went for a free eye test at tesco yesterday and, stupidly and very un-MSE, tried some specs on in store and paid for them on the spot. I really liked them and was lured by the free second pair offer (and the clubcard points). They are designer frames and come to £120.

I subesquently checked the very same models for prices online and found an ebay shop (not private seller) selling the very same frames for £20! They didn't include lenses but recommended another online retailer for these and they can do them for £15! This includes fitting the lenses into the frames and delivery. So the whole lot comes to £35 online - a 70% saving on Tesco. To add insult to injury, Tesco themselves sell the very same frames/lens combo for £99 so a 20 quid saving by going online on the spot! To be fair, the cheap glasses advice on here isn't particularly up to date and I have no idea what quality of service these retailers truly offer but first impressions seem very good.

Anyway, this is all by the by. I called Tesco after finding this out to see if I could get a refund and they said I couldn't unless the glasses were faulty or otherwise not up to advertised spec - not just for changing my mind. Glasses are a special case as they are bespoke items after all. This seems fair enough but before I accept my fate, I wondered if anyone here had any advice on this. Should I call again and just be more bullish about the fact their prices are so much higher than online should I just take this a very expensive lesson?

Its highly unlikely Tesco will give you your money back just because you have changed your mind, accept your fate and next time shop around

    contact them again and cancel.

They will not have been made yet and can still be cancelled.

You should gave gone to Asda, their returns on glasses are a lot better.
  • Cheers all, I've emailed their customer service (no response yet).

Does anyone have any tips on getting a contact lens prescription for free by the way? Whilst Tesco do eye tests for glasses for free, the lens fitting is £15 (and unnecessary in my case as I've been wearing contacts for about 2 years now but apparently they have to do this for every new customer). This smells of a rip off too.

I am afraid its not as simple as ringing to cancel.

The system we used to use was that once you press order on the computer the order is sent to the Regional Glazing Centre, or whoever is supplying the lenses. The order is processed immediately. In my time I have only ever cancelled one order, and that was a PITA as the store still had to pay for the lenses and frame.

Yes if you are a new customer you have to have a new customer appt, They will have to start their own records for you, they cant just supply you lenses without checking that they still fit, etc. Defintely not a rip off.

They might have done it free if you asked them and as you had spent money with them, but as you want to cancel they probably wont!

  • Ah, I see (or not at the moment!). At least it's not £120 like the glasses! And I know to go to getlenses.com for the lenses themselves.

I cancelled an order from Vision Express last year as they were for my Dad and he had passed away. They gave me a £20 refund for £100 specs. So if Tesco refunds because you've changed your mind you'd be very lucky.
