so how do you do it?!
i find it cheeky but i also feel its really cheeky to be asking you to pay nearly £5 for a bit of material in the shape of a chair which you cant even keep!!
i just dont know how to go about it
when in the meeting do you ask?
which meeting do you ask it in?
    what do you ask?
do you ask for different things to be cheaper or the whole amount
would you be so kind as to give me exact words youve used
    xx

this is my job, (I arrange utility contracts for the blue chips) so I find it easy..but, good points are..

Do they seem eager or bored? If they are eager for the work, just say, well we prefer the way you do "x" but "competitor" does it for £less but we like their (extra added value). If they seem off hand or bored, just say, we have a price for this at less £ and then name what you are prepared to pay. if they want your money, they will come down.

    IHTH
  • I've always used the budget to get a discount tbh

I've said we really love your x we have a 2nd choice supplier they will do it for x (more what you want to pay) your product is what we want but were struggling to make it fit our budget

i've also said to them " as its your area of expertise I will bow to your experience do you have any solutions that would work for us "

that has worked for me previously and i've pretty much got what I wanted for the price I wanted e.g getting an £800 quid discount on my venue was negotiated using these techniques

for what its worth bubbles I know exactly where your coming from I am really uncomfortable with it too and while I was waiting for answers it has been a nightmare I stressed over it loads but at the back of my head I just keep saying "no this is my money and my budget I want the best I can get for the money I have "

    HTH a little
    xx

Definitely tell them your budget and ask them what they can do to make it work to that. It's quite fun once you get started. x
  • thanks rainbow, i like chair covers but if the chairs are fine i wont use em and to charge nearly a fiver for each one is ridiculous really!
how many guests have you got?

If thats what the venues quote and you don't manage to get a discount try asking them for recommendations for exteral companies. Our venue quoted £5 a chair, we said we'd leave it its a luxary we couldn;t afford.
At the end of the meeting we asked for local contacts for photography/entertainment and while there we also asked about people who did chair covers (as my H2B protested lol!). We found a supplier who would do them for £2.50 a head.

The venue had a wallet of business cards that local businesses had given, very handy as we don't live in the toen of the wedding.

try and get quotes from a few people, get the best price, knock 10-15% off it and tell one of the others that Mrs X gave you this price and could they better it? I managed to knock 70p per chair cover off with the new quote I was given, then went back to the first person and told them the new quote and asked if the could better it. It worked and I'm now paying a reasonable charge when taking their time, laundry fees etc. into consideration - I'm happy, theyr'e happy.

Sometimes the words "ill pay in cash" help too!

I thought exactly the same. Would never dream of asking face to face so i emailed a company called (Aladdins cave) - Special-events in doncaster reguarding decor for my wedding. I got twinkle backdrop with matching top table skirt & cake table skirt, twinkle archway for when i walk down the isle, 16 tall champagne glasses with all the fancy bits it comes with, biggest chocolate fountain they do,chair covers table covers & runners, 6 button holes,my bridal bouquet (very large shower bouquet full of gold roses) all for £1500, should have cost me between £1800-£1900 for the lot but coz i asked for a discount coz i would have been buying so much they gave me one, i am so chuffed :0) all u can do is ask, u aint going to lose anything in asking r u?!!

  • It sounds pathetic but while organising things for my wedding my OH has pushed me to the front and 'hid' (he's 6ft im 5ft 8) behind me while trying to negotiate discounts!!! LOL!!!! I dunno why but because im a total bargain hunter he thinks im really confident which isnt the case i put a brave face on and a brass neck and try but i agree with 1 of the other posters and like to e-mail and ask for discounts!!!
