national trust cant believe this.

Hi All

We take out a national trust membership each year and to do the MSE piece move between the English and Scottish one. Dont want to do the New Zealand one as want the money to stay in this country.

However just been looking at the English trust website and cant believe what I saw, they have a US based version which allows you full access to all of the properties, including car parking plus a discount in the shops which you dont get here.

The bit I cant believe is that at current exchange rates its actually cheaper for Americans to join our national trust than it is for us to. If you have a family it works out £25 cheaper or if you sign up for the first year only £5 less.

True they wont use it as much but there is nothing stopping them from using it every day of the year like us. has to be another rip off Britain way of charging.

Rant over :(

You've answered your own rant there. They won't use it as much so why should they pay more?

principle, you could be an American moving here and use it every day.

when you go to the US if you live close to an attraction you get a discount.

True, you could be moving over here and use it everyday, but the numbers that do this are likely to be minimal.

Some UK attractions offer discounts too to local residents.

When I lived in Scotland I had the cheaper NTS membership. When I moved part way through the year back to Kent I could use the NTS membership in England and Wales. But when it came to renewal I took out NT membership knowing that my membership went to the areas that I was most likely to visit. I could have renewed my NTS membership and skanked the NT but I chose not to. A principle as you say.

I think your beef should be about currency exchange rates rather than the National Trust. I'm Australian and visiting the UK next year and decided to join English Heritage for two years to get free access to all EH, CADW and HS properties. The exchange rate means I will pay about twice what you pay. I'm just delighted that I'm allowed to join and get to see so many UK properties. We promise not to nick anything or tread on too many flowers during our ten week visit!

Surely your chief concern should be that it's cheaper for loud obnoxious yanks to travel outside their borders and bother the rest of us....

What does it matter to you? I can't see how it affects you.

Blame the government for bankrupting the country and weakening the pound.

    Which newspapers do you read?

Guess - Sun, Star, Times, Express and of course the Mail.

if the pound was stonger it would be even cheaper to buy it in the US. if the pound was 2 dollars again it we would pay £84 and you could buy it for only £45 so I would be moaning even more :)

It matters because I am paying more than others for the same product.
