Moving Gas & Electricity Meters

I was wondering if anyone had any exprience of having there gas & electricity meters moved, were having an extension built on side of property and these require moving. Transco have quoted me over £700 just for Gas!

I'm with Powergen and they keep reffering me to transco, although have heard of people using other companies but can't locate any information.

Thanks in advance
Sara

Is trenching required? These days digging a trench is not cheap. I think it has to do with the safety of the little gnomes that do the work. No doubt you've heard of the "Elfin Safety Act":D and things like insurance premiums.

I work for local highways and in order to move somthing like gas and electricity expect to pay between £50/100 per meter if trenching is required and then around £350 disconnection and reconnection.
(thats what we get charged on a contact rate anyway)

oh and BTW Transco maintain most of the underground pipelines that feed gas, its the same for electricity, Scotish and Southern Electric (SSE) maintain the cables and then other companies charge for the electricity used and pay SSE a fee.
(different companies maintain different parts of the country)
  • We recently did one, EDF quoted 6k to dig a 20m trench plus about £1200 to install a new cable from a pole transformer to the meter point. They were quite happy for us to do the digging so we did and installed a duct for them to pull their cable through. It took a man with a minidigger about a day to do and cost under 1k inc the duct
