First Direct Application - confused

Hi to all in MSEland!

I am new to posting though have been a steady lurker for a very long time so feel that I know (and love!) a lot of you already.

I regularly follow the excellent advice given by Martin and all of you forum members and to that end I decided to have a go at applying for a First Direct bank account (mainly for the £100 bonus but also as I have had all my eggs in one basket with the Halifax for many years).

I did not apply on line though I did request an application pack from their website, which arrived yesterday. So far - so goood. Along with the bank application forms was a form for me to sign and return for a credit card (which I did not ask for) - not an application form just sign here please. Normally I would just do so and if a card was available all well and good - however in January I took out a new staff credit card offered by my employer ( I do not work for a bank/financial institution - I work for a very well known car breakdown company).

My question is - if I sign up and get refused as I have a new card within last 6 months would this damage my bank aaccount application - and likewise if I did not sign /return as requested.

I realise that probably the solution may be just to ring them but just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience and also thought it was about time that I dipped my toe in the MSE ocean.

Thanks for your kind attention to all

not had experience of this directly. I would think that as it wasnt a separate application they may just include it with the same search.

Is your staff card a company card used for work related expenses?

  • Hi onlypaddy

Thanks for responding - no my staff credit card is a card for which anyone can apply but staff are offered a special rate - however you do still have to meet the criteria on a credit search - just don't need to confirm salary/personal details

  • Just thought that I would update this old thread for anyone who might also be in receipt of unclear application forms from FD.

I filled in the form for the current account requesting a a joint account- zero overdraft required and an everyday esaver to fulfill the 'other product' requirement, putting details of both my own personal account and separate joint account details with Halifax and just signed the card application form to see what happened.

Lo and behold not only did I get my joint current account zero overdraft and esaver as requested. but also another single name current account for myself with a £500 overdraft facility , AND (wait for it!) a credit card in my own name with a limit of £6400!

What a result! I rang to activate the accounts and was very impressed with the prompt pleasant service and no hard sell, just a warm welcome. Had only intended to fulfill the requirements for the £100 bonus but have now decided to switch all my everyday banking to FD.

By coincidence I have received a letter from Halifax this morning upping my credit card limit with them to £6400 which seems rather quick as it was only recently that they had increased limit to £3900 not sure what that is about but its fine with me
