I now find that my house street number (1) is now shared with a flat above a corner shop which faces the high street - council says they can change this flat's street address and number to (1a), because they have a doorway into my street (a side street), even though for 100 years this flat above the corner shop shared the corner shops high street address and number (204) and (204a).

I've tried to get the Royal Mail to do something but they just referred me back to the council. My post sometimes ends up at the flat, and as it's empty at times, I have to wait for their agent to retrieve it,

This changed flat's street address and street number has come about to get a rental uplift.

Does anyone know whether the council is right as they just brushed me off quoting the London Building Act (Amendment) Act 1939 - Part II as amended by the Local Government Act 1985.

Any replies would be appreciated, because most peoples minds just boggle at our crazy council who gets money for new address applications, but this is an old flat above a corner shop.

Please excuse me if I posted this in the wrong place - will move it if someone thinks its more apposite elsewhere on mse.

Does the Royal Mail have anything to say about this?

They might have some power if confusion is being caused.

Our postman complained to his RM boss about it initially, as the flat owner changed the number without informing them or the council. We informed the council who wrote to the flat owner saying that they can't just change the number, but if they apply they will be allowed to, which he has done.

I've spent ages looking through the act, which is incredible long and frequently references to elsewhere.

The council have the ultimate power to decide an address but they have to have the approval of Royal Mail before they can do this. We had problems with the address of our previous house not appearing on Royal Mail's system and had to chase the council to find out why. We eventually found out that the house name chosen by the developer had actually been used by another property a few years ago and was in the Royal Mail system so I had to come up with a new house name on the spot!

    Cheers

    James.
