No sound coming from the monitor?

I'm sorry to start another thread but I seem to have had a few techie queries the last few days!
I have just bought this monitor and this computer and for some reason there is no sound?
I've checked the sound settings and Realtek Digital Output has a tick next to it and when I have itunes or youtube on, the bar at the side moves as though there is sound, but I can't hear any!
On the user guide for the monitor, it says audio cable optional, so does that mean it's up to me to get one if I want sound or I only need one if I want one but the audio will work without it, which doesn't make much sense to me?
There doesn't appear to be any volume controls on the monitor itself either.
The monitor and computer are connected through a blue pin cable which I think is a VGA? That is the only cable I had with the monitor apart from the power cable.
Thanks for any help and please let me know if you need any more info

I don't think that monitor has any speakers.0

Looked at the specs and it doesn't mention anything about the speaker output - does it have anywhere such as speaker grills? To be honest, even if it does have sound then you'd still be better off getting a power driven pair of speakers...0

Sound comes out of speakers, not monitors. Have you tried plugging in some speakers/a headset?0

I've got a newish monitor with speakers - not worth it though as they are pants.0
