High fuel consumption - Advice

The 1.5 diesel 106s are notoriously good on fuel mind - you've got to understand here that a 1.6 petrol Astra is not gonna be in the same league when it comes to fuel economy no matter how it's driven.

So wait till the light comes on and reset the trip computer, then fill up as soon as possible with a full tank - keep the receipt as that will tell you how many litres of fuel you've pumped in.
When the fuel light comes on again you can take a note of the miles you've done since filling up and then do the maths - or if you Google 'MPG calculator' or something similar you can enter the details into a website and it will work your miles per gallon out for you.
Nah - better way is:
As you say, fill up until full (first/second click at the pump - pick one)
Reset the trip
Fill up again to the same point

Is it really such a big deal filling it to the top as so many are implying. Ok so the accuracy will increase because you will be driving for many more miles. I think it is more important you check the mileage for each type of driving situation, i.e. the difference between town and motorway mpg is huge.
The only way to accurately do it is to fill it to the top twice, like I said.
Any other way is guesswork - the fuel warning light isn't exactly the most precise thing in the world (my car has a full trip computer in it and even that isn't the most precise). The top of the tank is always going to be the top of the tank - you don't need to run it to empty before the second fill up.....
My 1.6 Twinport Astra returns 40MPG combined - although it is a 2007 car that has been very well maintained and has only covered 30k miles.0 -
40 miles to £10 is circa 20 mpg. An Astra 1.6 SXi ought to get more, no matter how agressively it is driven. How good is her maths <LOL>?"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
