School lunch rant - Would you complain?
Comments
-
I think you should go into school in the morning, with a bread stick, and poke the TA in the eye!
How dare she take away the (healthy!!) lunch you had prepared, and replace it with some sh!tty congealed macroni cheese with God knows how much fat and calories in it?
Bring it on when my son starts school (got a wait yet, he'll be 1 next week) because I will not be dictated to, to what I feed him.
Not when he won't be allowed a biscuit in his lunch box, yet the kids on school dinners can all have cake for pudding.
It's bloody madness and I'm fuming on your behalf.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I'd write and complain.
I had to write and complain when my son was on packed lunches. The "food police" used the word bad too much which I disagreed with and it was irritating me. They were just saying crisps are bad, but he'd been told crisps once are twice a week are fine, but it's not healthy having them every day. They said all cake is bad, but he'd been taught that a slice of fruit loaf is a better choice than a Cadbury mini roll and so on. I didn't think it was a healthy attitude towards food that they were promoting.
The final straw came when he was told his cheese sandwich was unhealthy because the bread was cut too thickly and cheese is high in fat.
I could understand their concerns if it was Dairylea in value white bread or something like that. However the offending sandwich was made from home made wholemeal bread and mature cheddar cheese. Also he's like a stick insect so he really doesn't need to be worrying about the fat in a couple of slices of cheese!
At the moment he's on the Durham free school dinners for all primary school children, but a few are still on packed lunches. His friend was upset last week as she had a slice of homemade carrot cake removed from her lunchbox as it was deemed unhealthy. Meanwhile my son was on school dinners tucking into chocolate fudge cake for dessert?!Here I go again on my own....0 -
not only would i refuse to pay the bill for a fat laden mac cheese, i would present them with a bill for the cost of a perfectly balanced packed lunch which they stole from your child!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

Anyway they are doing this whole "healthy eating" thing and a few times she's had things removed from her. I really object to it, but didn't say anything and just told her we'd have to follow the rules better (I don't believe in contradicting the school in front of her as I think it's a bad example).
However today she has come home with a slip to say that I owe the school money for her lunch as her packed lunch was deemed "unsuitable" by the lunch attendant (who is a classroom assistant). The note also had a handwritten addition stating that "dunkable type dips" are not an appropriate lunch for a child and she was given a school meal. It also said that the amount of food she brought was far too much. Also enclosed was the food guide they give out.
Her lunch was humus (homemade), guacamole (not homemade), slices of carrot, pepper and celery and 2 breadsticks. She also had a tub of mixed fruit, a tomato (she eats tomatoes like other kids eat apples) and some strawberry milk. Now she did have rather a lot of veg in her box, but I'm happy for her to eat as much of the veg as she wants.
So they took that off her and gave her a plate of macaroni cheese, potatoes, a yoghurt and her water bottle. How is that healthier?
They also told her (she's 7) that she wasn't to bring an unhealthy lunch to school again as she didn't want to get fat. I'm bloody fuming - imo you don't say things like that to children.
Anyway I'm seeing her teacher tomorrow for parent's night, but I was thinking of asking to see the Head in the morning about this lunch thing as I'm so annoyed. Would you?
Thanks. Gemma x
looks like the obese police have gone ott on this... fat on veggies give me strength0 -
I'm going to go in and ask exactly what they are teaching the kids at our school - My DS10 is a perfectly healthy little boy with hardly a scrap of fat on him - he spends most of his free time biking around the local park - he got a new bike that he saved up for so is out on it at every opportune moment
He scoots to school if he isn't biking - I usually have to run to catch him up - so you can imagine he's fairly healthy - he has school diners and the menus seem ok - no cakes or biscuits and he's just joined the 'food is fun' lunch club where they cook and bring home muffins etc that they've cooked themselves.
His diet at home is average - I tend to cook from scratch these days as it's cheaper with the odd waitrose pie thrown in as he loves the chicken and mushroom one - mine isn't the same apparently;) But he now says that he's on a diet so he won't get fat!!!! He refuses to eat dinner unless there's something green on the plate and he says that school say he MUST eat greens every day!!! Erm - what about orange, yellow, purple (Peppers, corn and aubergine etc)???
He's really been going on about being fat lately and it's really worrying me, especially as boys can get anorexia as well!!! He's 10 FGS!!! I am so sick of all the dietary lectures and I'd quite like them to concentrate on his spelling instead!Noli nothis permittere te terere
