New bathroom suite required

Collected the keys for my new house on Friday, and clearly had my rose-tinted glasses on when I viewed it. The bathroom is a disaster zone. The shower head is held up with an interestingly shaped lump of toilet roll, and I suspect that the amount of wood panelling in the room possibly lead to the loss of at least a good square mile of rainforest.

I need a new loo, bath, shower and sink. It's not a big room, six foot four by six foot six, but I need it to come in as cheaply as possible. As I'm a DIY disaster, I'd need someone to install it all.

Any tips on places to shop for cheap bathroom suites, or what to ask of bathroom fitting companies?

Depends on your budget..try B and Q for basic cheapo stuff. Plumbworld.co.uk is good too. Then just shop around for quotes for installation.

if you collect tesco's clubcard point they can be exchanged for vouchers which can be used at mfi ( bathroom dept ) don't forget that the vouchers are worth 4x the face value of c/c points
ask around neighbours / friends etc for a good plumber ,

We got the best prices from the local plumbers merchants on the industrial estate. One of the guys was very helpful and gave us good advice on various fittings, tips on making the job good etc. We had a particular sized spot for the bath, about 1685mm. Popular bath size is 1700mm, but they all generally come under that a little. The Plumbers merchant was able to quote exact sizes of the baths to us. They deilvered it all free too. Whilst your there collecting the catalogues, ask who does a good job at fitting them.

Friends of ours had a bath delivered from b&q. Looked fine too. Fitted it. Lovely. Filled it with water and a hairline crack was revealed under the pressure and started dripping. Not so lovely. Could happen to anyone I suppose, not just b&q - but they were a pain to get it replaced through.

    Hi
We also moved 2 weeks ago and now have a revolting bathroom. The local building/plumbers merchants have got a nice basic but good quality Armitage Shanks suite called the Sandringham which comes with bath, basin, loo & seat, both sets of taps and plugs and a side panel for £250. It seems to be a package deal from the manufacturers as 3 suppliers do it at the same price.
Tops tiles had some pretty reasonable tiles and a couple of the local tile shops also had some end-of-ranges going cheap.
If theres no major moving of pipe-work it shouldn't cost too much for a plumber to fit a suite.
There seems to be quite a few decent showers by Triton and similar for around the £150 mark or even cheaper, and if you don't need the rest of the electics in the house upgrading that shouldn't be too expensive to fit. Just don't choose too fancy or powerful a shower, as apparently (according to the plumber who quoted for us) most houses over 10 yrs old have to have something done to the electics to support it.

What about fitting it yourself, it's amazing how simple it is. The only problem you may have is charging the loo - can sometimes be a horrible job.
  • You could try the website of The Guild of Master Craftsmen to find a reputable plumber in your area. Phone three of them and ask how much they will charge to fit a bathroom suite, and also to supply and fit. Guild members are vetted and it is one way of cutting down the likelyhood of a cowboy. https://www.findacraftsman.com
