It won't affect the OP's licence for 10 years.

    Bad idea.

If the OP tries to use such a certificate to imply that he was covered at the time of the alleged offence then he will be guilty of a further offence:

    "173 Forgery of documents, etc

    (1) A person who, with intent to deceive—
    (a) forges, alters or uses a document or other thing to which this section applies, or
    ...
    is guilty of an offence.

    (2) This section applies to the following documents and other things—
    ...
    (h) any certificate of insurance or certificate of security under Part VI of this Act"

He can by all means produce it to show that insurance has subsequently been purchased in an attempt to mitigate the offence, but if it is any form of temporary cover I can't see the authorities being too impressed by that.

Not as unimpressed as most of us would have been if he had hit our cars while driving without insurance.

    I think it should read:
"I have 3rd party fire and theft on my own car as well as being a named driver on my mums insurance policy." - but that's just a guess.

I don't. I think it means the OP's car is covered TPF&T but in their mother's name with them as a named driver.

Or in other words, their own insurance is probably fronted (ie void and illegal).

Just you have to declare it for 10 years when ask on insurance quotes.

Bingo. It is 5 years/60 months. You can declare it for longer; but the insurer will not rate on it (illegal to do so!) You may be lucky and find some only care/rate on it if it was in the last 2/3 years.

I used to work for a software house dealing with insurance quotations, so I know quite a lot about a few insurers!

But if this is the car you take with you to Uni and you are not shown as the main user, then yes, it is a fronted policy.
