my friends once defaulted on a loan over 6 years ago,she never had a ccj as it didnt go to court, she has since been good and they have paid things on time.she was under impression this default would only be on credit file for 5 years..so why is it still stopping her getting a better deal on cc and loans.?

Its 6 years for a default to be removed.
It may be worth while that your friend getting a copy of her credit record from equifax/experian.
capital one/barclays are always good to try with a default.
mind if you apply for to much at one time it can cause you to get declined.

The only way to know what the problem is is to order her credit files from experian (https://www.experian.co.uk) and equifax (https://www.equifax.co.uk).
You can get paper versions for £2 each.
Common things:
Not being on the electoral roll
Not having a home phone number
Too many searches
Too much available credit
