british gas renewal?

Options
i signed up to priced protection in 2005 for five years with british gas now it is due to for renewal and they are offering new fixed price plan to 2012. this was for gas and electric. as it turned out, it was a good deal but it is always better to ask!! IF YOU DON'T ASK YOU DON'T FIND OUT?;)

does anyone know of any other good deals?

There are already posts about this issue.

The best thing you can do is check how many units of gas and electricity you use in a year (via your old bills) and then go to a price comparison site and see for yourself which is the best deal for you.

But like me, you are going to be paying a lot more compared to what we currently pay on Price Protection 2010, so expect a nice increase!

If the offer includes a "premium" of 4% on BG standard prices for 2 years (as posted elsewhere) then it is definitely NOT a good deal - there are many better deals out there - use a comparison site with your actual consumption figures before you commit to BG!
  • I have Economy seven (day and night rates) for electricity which was capped until April 30 2010 (today in other words) and I also have Gas (I don't know what tariff), British Gas providing both utilities. Now I need to change but I find it too confusing with the cheap night rate for electricity (until today at only 1.860p per kWh). Because of this I have been heating water at the cheap night time rate on a timer and have saved a lot doing this instead of using gas. I have no idea how to make a comparison. Can anyone help please?

You might have been only paying 1.860p/kWh for night rate electricity, and indeed heat water with an immersion cheaper than gas.

However you have been paying approx 2p a kWh extra for all of the electricity you use during the other 17 hours. So for most people with gas it is very difficult to make Economy 7 worthwhile.

You need to work out exactly whan percentage of electricity you used at cheap rate and enter those figures into a comparison website together with your gas consumption.

e.g. if you used, say, 1,000kWh on cheap rate(E7) and 3,000kWh on daytime rates, you enter on the website 4,000kWh with 25% on E7.

You then need to enter 4,000kWh for a non-E7 tariff and see if that is cheaper.

That 2012 traiff the BG is putting people on is about as far from a good deal as you could possibly get considering some of the other capped/fixed tariffs available.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
