    You also need to take into account the yield. So the total returns over the last 5 years have been 42% for the All share and 39% for the FTSE 100. As the FTSE 100 represents 81% of the market capitalisation there's unlikely to be a huge difference. The all share represents 98% by capitalisation.

    The one to choose largely depends on what's already held. Someone with a portfolio of large company shares already might choose the FTSE 250 to complement those holdings. For someone without any other holdings the all-share might make most sense.

    Because the 250 represents just 15% of market capitalisation it's far more volatile and the FTSE 100 or all-share would be the more likely choice if you thought it was time to be defensive.

    In comparing the returns of the HSBC trackers bear in mind the TERs were slashed by up to 75% around September last year and so returns prior to that point will appear less good than now.
