My annual service contract runs out in May with HomeServe. I've run some Google searches on them and the results show they're not too hot.

The annual breakdown costs £71.88 pa
The annual service is £60.

I've also heard some horror stories on British gas.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

TIA

I recommend you don't bother. Have an annual service and call out an independent GSR engineer if you have a problem.
Unless you have a consistently unreliable boiler, then annual contracts will invariably cost you more than a one-off repair. And your contract only covers the boiler, not the pump/tank/rest of the CH system.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    As macman says.

If you like paying monthly (or annually), put the money in a savings account of your own rather than of a boiler service contract provider.
Draw on it as required ... or use it to treat yourself when you realise you don't otherwise draw on it. :)

British Gas have been first class on mine, always hear the horror stories but never the good ones.
I have had it for almost 3 years, serviced every year, had a fault not long after xmas when the snow arrived, they were out the next day and and did a temp fix and back within 2 days with the part, kept in contact every time, had a leak from the cold fill pipe on the toilet, again, out the next day, replaced all the parts required from van stock.
Ive also had them out as there was low pressure on the shower, they replaced some valves and sensors somewhere and its been spot on ever since, so whoever said it doesnt cover any of the other parts of the water/CH system is talking twoddle!
Ive read the odd horror story on here, but i think they are first class!
    And i work for SSE!

Not 'twaddle'. Depends on which package you take, the OP referred specifically to boiler service contract. That won't cover repairs to the shower or toilet. You pay more for covering the entire system.
How much have you paid for 3 years of this service?

If it's a bosch or worcester boiler, they have a very good and very affordable annual service/warranty plan.

Yes just OP was referring to boiler only cover, so apologies for jumping the gun, realised i assumed it was a boiler/CH cover, as i didn't realise they did a separate cover for each!
Pay £27 a month which covers everything, CH system, boiler, electrics, plumbing, glass, water pipe from the meter to the stop !!!!.
    And piece of mind!
And every time i have had a problem British Gas have been first class service, i can it cheaper through SSE using staff discount, but I'm more than happy with the service i've received i wont change!

Jeez, £324 per annum; are you serious? I haven't paid out as much as £324 for that over at least the last 5 years added together, and that includes paying for an annual service. You should really get a reliable local guy who can come in, do what you need, and be there when you need him.

We used to have a service contract with BG (we now rent - one of the joys of renting is not having to sort this haha). It was called Homecare 200 (well, "3 star cover" then) which was £17 a month and that included all repairs to central heating and radiators and an annual service of the boiler included. My mother has the new Energy Extra 50 where she pays £3 per month and then a fixed £100 per repair for any faults with electrics, plumbing, drains and the central heating (but no annual service) - good if you don't think you'll really use it that much!
