hi all.
Went to a meeting after work because I was told I can now apply for my teaching licence. Came home to register my interest with the professional body and it seems that work have it wrong and I'll have to do another year of study and gain the full diploma (which is quite full on and a minimum of 75 hours teaching on top) and as I had decided I couldn't hack another year of working full time, studying and teaching as much as I have done this academic year again, I guess I won't be able to get my fully qualified status.
It's all a bit new still to the post 16 learning area so I've emailed the person looking after it at work to double check and I've emailed the professional body but I feel it reads quite plainly what you need and I don't have it.
Oh well, I'm not overly fussed, it means the last year of study is a waste of time though as I could have taught with the 10 week intro course I did 2 years ago. You're supposed to be fully qualified within 5 years of starting your training so my choices are either do another year of study or teach with my current status for another 3 years and then stop teaching.
Can't see I would still be teaching in another 3 years anyway as it's really not panned out how I wanted it to so it's a bit meh at doing a year of study for nothing but not the end of the world.

aw bb that's pants, you'd think they'd have checked it out properly before you started rather than getting your hopes up. glad you're not too upset about it though.
I'm feeling old, in Home and away they were quoting from classic old films, like casablanca and Dirty dancing, dd isn't old!Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
BB, I'm not sure what to say. :grouphug: What would you do instead of teaching? Or have you not thought that far ahead?
Claire, I hope it went ok at the Dr's.
I need to study but have no motivation! Someone help me, please.0 -
Well to be honest the teaching was always a sideline.
I thought over the years about doing it full time in schools but could never afford to take a year off to do the PGCE. This was a way to try my hand at it, teach a subject I'm passionate about and get qualified. It's just so much work though and as I work full time already, it's a killer. I wasn't looking to work in a school (that means another year to transpose the qualification!!) as the thought now of teaching in a school fills me with horror after teaching some sixth formers and hearing my ex's tales about some of the supply schools he has been in! I couldn't hack unruly kids chucking tables, walking out of class as they feel like it f'ing and blinding all day at teachers - and that's at schools round here which aren't underperforming!
At least I didn't pay for the qualification - work paid for me as I teach for them so I've lost nothing financially. At the end of the day the 'lower' grade of teacher status I was applying for is pretty useless anyway, it's only the full status which is of much use in the future. If I'd wanted to teach at a college full time I would have to do the extra year of study and I now know full time teaching isn't for me. It's mountains of paperwork, the constant 'putting on a show' as soon as the first person walks in the door and (for cookery especially) it's hot and tiring.
It's no loss to me really - it would have been nice to say I had a professionally recognised qualification but it's hardly something I would have worn round my neck on a big chain and at the moment (because it's all so new) employers are saying the level i'm at is enough for me to either teach or become a trainer so for now it really doesn't matter.
Going forward it wasn't going to be my new career so I'll just carry on for now and chalk it up to experience when the time comes for me to drop it (if I haven't dropped it before then).

BB I hope it works out for you.
I am 41, have 3 kids, work full-time in a job I hate but can see no way out. I have neither the time nor energy to go back to studying and I have no real skills I could take to a new profession. Only because I have to pay the mortgage and support my kids I am stuck as a wage slave. I do have an OH who also works full-time but we don't have high paid jobs and every penny counts, as my kids get older they just get more costly, but I do love them and wouldn't change them. I am totally risk averse so will just have to perserve with my job.0 -
