Got a m8's birthday and she wants fancy dress 70's
1 outfit for one night only.
what can i do, outfits are about £30.00 to buy, and well to be honest thats a lot of money for one night.
I don't do well in short little numbers either lol
help and advice.. have sewing machine if i have to make something, although it has been years and not really made a proper outfit to wear on it.

There is often amazing 70s stuff in charity shops very cheap if you look. Also, a lot of recent fashion has 70s influence and you might be able to get something from your wardrobe. I had one a while ago and had a floaty printed top from H&M which was very 70s, wore jeans and borrowed some 70s style jewellry - cost nothing!
Also keep in mind 70s is Kaftans, knitted shawls, hippie beads, tie dye...you might already have something that would work?0 -
Another fairly cheap option is 'Bay City Roller fan' - get some 1-2" tartan ribbon and wundaweb it down the outside leg of a pair of wide leg jeans or white flared trousers then add some tartan trim to a short sleeved, tight fitting white blouse, turn the jeans up so they're a bit half mast, wear stripey socks and platform shoes or wedge sandals on bare feet (if nothing else) get some tartan material to make a scarf for your wrist - all this stuff can be picked up in charity shops or on ebay, tartan ribbon from a craft shop. Google pics of the Bay City Rollers and make yourself some badges to pin on your blouse for an extra touch. Hair's a bit trickier as people had minging haircuts in the 70's - if your hair's long and straight just do a centre parting and leave it like that or put a couple of grips in the sides or put side flicks in and hairspray 'em back like mad.
Other clothes - peasant blouses, velvet jackets, maxi skirts, maxi dresses, Laura Ashley flowery prints, blouses had high necks and mutton sleeves, patchwork suede skirts and bags were popular, flares with high waists, tightfitting jumpers/shirts, bomber jackets, tan leather or fur jackets, polo neck skinny rib jumpers, espadrille wedges. I was a teenager in the 70's so remember all the horrideous fashions
Or punk came in in '76/'77 so that's always another option, everyone overlooks that when they do 70's fancydress.

If you're a lady (im guessing you are?) you could go for the comedy version for really cheap.
Crappy old trousers - sew some flares on the bottom.
Large white shirt with big collars if you can find one in yours or OH's stuff.
long hair (if you have it) or a cheap curly long wig
platforms if you have some
another cheap wig, a short curly one to make it look like you have chest hair
a silly medalion, go down the scrapyard and get a mercedes badge or similar and hang it on a necklace/chain.
I always do stupid fancy dress, the last one i went to was trashcan superheroes, everyone had to come in fancy dress but wasnt allowed to spend any money or any more than 30 mins on their costimes, it was hilarious what people came up with! (outfits included Super tennants man, plumber boy, super terrorist, Minger, Iron Man (seriously this dude came with an iron and had a light taped to his chest! haha) and super pizza delivery boy who didnt have a costume but bought 10 pizzas for the party).MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0 -
I agree with BananaBelly, charity shops are a great place to look.
Although, if you search your wardrobe, you may find some items that work anyway. Or maybe some friends/family have some items you could borrow?February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
