Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes.
My partner and I bought a car last August (8 months) from a car dealer on HP (21 months left on the agreement). The engine is now 'broken' (excuse technical term - the rods have shot through the engine) and will cost more than the car is worth to repair.
We got in touch with the finance company and they have said to get in touch with the dealer and that they will send out a quality assurance pack.
Does anyone know what is likely to happen next - the purchase price of the car was £3,500 and we still have £2,500 to pay-off, will the finance company make us pay for the car even though it may be written off as we can't affoard the repair or will the car dealer and the finance company pay for repairs? I've tried to read consumer credit act and used car sales info, but still don't really understand - any help would be very gratefully appreciated.

The finance company wont pay for the car to be fixed.
Get some quotes from a few places for the work to be done. Even ask the dealer for a goodwill gesture, reminding them its on finance.0 -
thank you for the last message.
I called the dealer and spoke to the person who sold me the car. He seems to think that the GAP insurance we bought will cover the car if it is mechanically written off... I'm not so sure, but he said he will look into and call me back.
Does anyone know anything about GAP insurance and if it would cover this?
thanks

i reckon you are responsible for the repair costs after all these things happen
cant see insurance or gap insurance covering this0 -
I seriously doubt you will get repairs paid for and you will stillnbe liable for finance payment.
The gap insurance only comes in to play if car is stolen or written off in accident to cover difference between the payout from your insurance and what is owed on the finance.so because you cannot claim on your insurance for breakdowns the gap insurance will not apply.
What car is it? I am sure you could get it repaired cheaper with a recon engine or even short motor.0 -
Have you serviced the car?
I can't see anyone footing the cost except you, unless a warranty was included in the deal. Chances are any independent dealer warranty on a car in that rice range would have a claim limit well under what you need anyway.
If potential car repair costs were included in car finance, noone would be able to afford the repayments.
£2.5k engine on a £3.5k car sounds a lot? You didn't buy a 20 year old BMW 750i did you?0 -
Well if the rods have gone through the block it could easily cost more than the £2500 of finance left to pay if you use new parts.
You might be able to source a complete 2nd hand engine or even better just a short(ie from the head down) one. What car was it?0 -
Thought GAP only coveres you if the car is written off in an accident?
How else would it be written off...?0 -

Look for a used engine and a good small garage - get several quotes.
You are totally liable for this, and neither your insurance company, your GAP insurance, your finance company nor the car dealer will be paying up.
