Advice needed on how to Repair some Plaster

Hi all,
I have been getting our walls ready for when we plan to wallpaper them in the next month and above our window alot of plaster has fallan off (See pic below). We have asked our local council to repair this but have been told around 9 week wait so i have decided to look into repairing this ourself.
The problem is i have never done any plaster work before so what is the best way to tackle this and how do i go about repairng the best way ready for wall paper.

Also we have another area which is on our celling near our roof hatch which leaked last year that needs replacing with plaster as its started to fall off. How is the best way to replace this and re plaster.

    Dont ask me..

Last time I did some plastering, my mate said.

"What did you use to put that up with? A catapult!"
“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”

if your papering over the top, you dont need any plaster. just use filler with a broad filler knife or float, to skim it off.
a very light sand afterwards should do the trick. (you may need to do it twice if its really bad).
    Get some gorm.

Sorry Ormus, i'll have to take over here......

Above your window you've lost too much plaster to simply fill (unless your not to bothered about the final finish after papering)
Using filler will give you a nightmare result on that size of area. It does need skimming.

Also have you taken "stippled artex" off the ceiling by any chance?

My advice to you would be wait the 9 weeks for the council to sort it out or find £200 (per room) to "square up" for papering.

It was plastering that finally made me realise that my DIY skills were very sadly lacking.....:(

Looked like crazy paving when I had finished.
