Registered driver and person insuring the vehicle

Hi There,
Is it possible for a named driver that is actually the main driver of the vehicle to insure the car and use their no claims that they have earned to keep this live rather than loosing it or must it be the registered keeper who insures the car. If someone could just advise me on this please
regards,
Stephen

I dont understand the question, the main driver of a vehicle ALWAYS legally has to me down as the main driver not a named driver regardless of who the registered keeper.

    Anything other is insurance fronting

The registered keeper doesn't have to insure the car.

I insure a car that i use as the main driver but my mum owns it. More and more insurance companies do this now. A broker might be a good place to start as then you know i
    you have proper cover
  • What I meant was that I am the registered keeper and that I would want to make my son the the main driver and he has no vehicle of his own insured but has some no claims from when he did. So would he be able to insure the car instead of me and use his no claims to keep them active even though I am the keeper.
Ihope that is a bit clearer.
    Regards,
    Steve
  • Thanks Hwalke for that will try a broker.

Depends on the insurer. As long as you disclose all material facts and provide an explanation to insurers satisfaction, I am not aware that there is any law that says the registered keeper has to insure the vehicle, albeit I know that this is what insurers prefer.

If his no claims are no older than two years he would probably still be able to use them, depending on how they were earned.

I would treat this entire post with a decent pinch of salt.

I'm with you on that. A few years ago, my insurer was happy for OH to be the policyholder on a car registered to me, and I became a named driver. In fact is was the insurer that suggested it because OH had more no claims than I did!
