What to grow to hide fence.. very narrow space

Hi, we live in flats, so have a section of garden. We've fenced ours off, but after rejigging the garden, the fence panel is a bit warped. It's driving my OH mad.. he's on about either planting something to cover it, or re-doing whole fence (which we just can't afford at the moment). Would love to plant something to cover, and establish a hedge.. it's wider at the back, but quite narrow towards the front.

you can see pics here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5736772&id=564595139

The space is from fence to wire running across ground

OH would like something that we can establish as a boundry hedge etc. I would love something either pretty/smelly or even better edible..
Is there anything we can plant here?

    Hi there

Delmar39 was looking for advice on a similar problem and wanted some suggestions.

Not had many replies unfortunately - hopefully the new week and new topic will bring some more help!
  • I tried to look at the picture but it didn't let me so I can't see how tall and narrow the space is. Also how many hours sun does it get / which way is it facing for sunlight?

    Sorry, here's pics..
very narrow till half way down:

Then it widens a bit at back...

As you can see, it's a very very narrow space.. looks narrower again on photos.. space is about 6-9" at the narrowest bit. Neighbour doesn't really use her garden, so can't see disturbing her plants as being a problem.

I know if my OH's idea of a hedge would work, but anything that would disguise the fence would do - if it's edible all the better, but if not, just to tidy up the fence.. and perhaps add height - asking a lot I know!

It gets the sun most of the day :)
  • Personally, I'd go for edible climbers, like runner beans etc. Lovely red flowers, and plenty of pods to eat and freeze. And maybe nasturtiums? Again, beautiful flowers, and can be used in salads.

THat's what I was thinking, but then I thought after growing season I will ahve to cope with OH's moans about the fence.. I suppose, it would be good for this summer though if I can't think of anything else :)

He's also just told me he really wants some sort of shrub that will just grow over the hedge and he can just trim back (thinking I have lost my edible hopefulness!! )
  • It'll keep OH quiet for a while though ;)
And by the time they have died back, it will be getting dark earlier so visible for less time :D

Worst case scenario, it can be temporary solution for this year, giving plenty of time to decide on a long term solution?

I think you will struggle to find a shrub to fit in that space, especially at the narrow end.
