Hi
Had a flyer through for some sort of bespoke lawn treatment starting from about £15. My lawn is full of weeds and generally not in a great state and was wondering if anyone had any experience of such companies. I'd be happy to pay £50 or so if it meant I had a nice lawn.
Cheers

My neighbour of a few (3+) years ago was a bit of a lawn freak: played croquet on it. He used Greenthumb and he was very happy with it. Cost him about £25 a visit back then and he had them out twice a year.
It's a franchise operation so the service may vary according to the capability of the franchise operator in your area.0 -
I think that's them. They say they fit the treatment to the lawn so I can see that it could easily vary, aside from the actual excecution of the treatment. And if, you know, your history...0

I used Green Thumb when I first moved into my house and the new turf hadnt settled very well. They feed the lawn and treat the weeds on a quarterly basis and the best thing is that there is no commitment, you can just have one treatment or have them book you in automatically each quarter. They can come when you are at work, if they can have access to the work and do the job. I was very pleased with what they did. They killed all the dandelions/dock etc and the grass is always so green! I would definitely recommend them!:beer:0

Used Greenthumb for 2 years now ... definitely recommend them .
They know what needs doing .. i don't ! and as they claim .. annual cost probably about the same as if i had to buy all the Evergreen etc
There's some things in life i'm happy to leave to the experts. !
All i know is i have the best lawn in the street. !0 -
Expect the first visit or two to be more expensive than the following ones. They'll have to put in extra effort/treatment to get rid of existing weeds, old thatch & moss (if any), plus maybe spiking and sanding to correct bad drainage etc. Once it's under control then a spring and autumn 'workover' is all that should be necessary. They'll use different fertilisers according to the time of year: high nitrogen early on for spring growth and then, in late summer, something else (can't remember what) to promote strong root growth to withstand autumn/winter cold and wet.
Sit back and enjoy - and put a hammock on your Christmas list!0 -
I used greenthumbs for a couple of years (3 treatments a year I think) and the grass was great.
It started off full of weeds and ended up lush and green. Managed to bust a lawnmower on it because of how thick it was. However, I found that after two years the results dropped off because of the huge amount of thatch that was now in it and how compacted it had become.
I have a huge garden and couldn't afford their quote to de-thatch, spike and top dress so it started to deteriorate and I canceled the treatments until I could do something about the thatch and compaction.
I borrowed a friend's electric de-thatcher and later spiked the worst bits of the lawn that had moss. I did a weed and feed a couple of weeks ago and it took me less than 20 minutes to walk the area with a shop bought product. Once the moss has died I'll reseed. This year I'll topdress it myself.
Saying that, if I had the money to let Greenthumbs do it all I'd have them back in a flash.
Good company. "carpe that diem"0 -
I have used Greenthumbr now for about 2 years. I pay about £17 for my front lawn (the kids play football in the back and no one but us can see it so its does not count!!). The lawn was full of weeds when they first came and it is now lush, green and weed free. I have found their staff pleasant and polite and the payment sytem is straightforward. You get a letter through the door with a tear off slip you sned off with a cheque. Like other posters on this thread I would recommend them if you want a lawn to be proud of.0

I do my own
I feed in every couple of weeks in Spring/Summer. If I get weeds I pick them up when they still small. I also aerate the lawn each year
Any patches I put new seed in and water every day if its dry. Have quite a lush lawn now. Granted its a small lawn and on a slight slope which is a pain to cut. Cuttings go in compost bin0 -
Thanks guys. Wasn't expecting such a positive response, will deffo give them a try!And if, you know, your history...0

If you want a perfect bowling green lawn (otherwise known as a green desert) and are willing to pay for it, then get them in.
As long as it stays green and presentableish, I prefer my lawn to be weedy. It's a lot better for wildlife and looks nicer to me. But then I drive by masses of dandelions in flower on the roadside and think "Wow, that looks good. Bet the bee's love it too!".
The easiest way to get a reasonable lawn that stays green is to just cut it regularly with the blades quite high. You'll get low growing "weeds" in there too, but so what. Weeds are just plants growing where they're not wanted, so that means mine don't count as weeds.
One word of warning if you do get them in, a highly fertilised lawn will grow a lot quicker than normal and will require more cutting. I wouldn't know as I never fertilise mine, but that would probably explain the build up of thatch mentioned by someone else as well.0
