Car Insurance and Divorced Lady Drivers

Can anyone tell me why a divorced lady driver should pay more for her car insurance than a married one?

When I came to renew my car insurance recently via on-line sites I was shocked to discover that a divorced driver is quoted, in some cases up to 3 times the premium of a married woman. A 'wag' told me it was because of the stress levels involved with a divorced woman and therefore more risk - but from experience I know that I was certainly more stressed prior to the divorce.

I've never made a claim, have over 9 yrs no claims and have no points on my licence - so why does getting rid of a useless lump of a husband cost me more everytime I insure my car??

  • I found a similar thing when my partner moved in with me and my car insurance cost less on renewal! I asked why and they said they considered co-habitees to be calmer and, therefore, less of a risk LOL
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!
  • Its all about claims, historically less claims come from married people than single people so insurers give a discount for being married.

Just like female drivers have less claims than male drivers so females get a discount or over 30's claim lass than an 18 year old so the over 30 gets a discount.

Its all in the claims history

As per stevemarsh, it's all about the numbers who have claimed in the past, and the extent of those claims, which give an indicative cost to the insurers.

The statistics can't lie. (Or can they??)

As to why single women claim more than married women, my guess would be that married women drive less than single women due to their husbands doing a lot of the driving.
